Rental company refuses to pay back deposit

29 August 2013 by YourProperty

We moved onto a plot and have paid our deposit to the rental company but even though we paid our rent on the first of every month, the landlord – with whom we have become friends – advised us that she does not get her rent from the rental company until much later in the month.

A month or so later, the rental company advised us that we should pay the rent directly to the landlord and not to them – which we did.

We moved in the middle of our two year contract and got suitable tenants which the landlord approved of. We gave her a full months notice which she accepted.

The rental company, who by this time was no longer in the picture, had to be contacted as they still had our deposit and according to the landlord this was an issue between us, the tenants and the rental company and it had nothing to do with the landlord.

I eventually contacted them a few days after we gave our notice to the landlord and we have had endless hassles with them paying our deposit back since then.

I was advised by one of the staff (the only one that I could get hold of) that our deposit will be paid back to us 30 days from when they were made aware of our move.

Recently I’ve been unable to get hold of them to confirm the pay date as well as the amount to be paid.

I then received an e-mail from the rental company telling me that they spoke to the landlord and will get back to me.

I replied saying that I don’t understand what this has to do with the landlord as the deposit was paid to the rental company and not the landlord (these were their words to me).

Can you please advise me on what we stand to do now, as this has been dragging on for much too long and I am not sure if we will get our deposit back at all.

Regards,
Struggling Tenant
