My husband and I visited a property with a view to renting it, but found the kitchen had no water piping, sink or cupboards, and there was no ceiling or electricity in the living areas and kitchen.
We reached an agreement with the landlord to use the first four months’ rental to make the property liveable. After three weeks’ occupation we saw potential in the property and told the owner we may be interested in purchasing it.
However, while doing the improvements, we realised there was potentially a problem with the foundations and advised the landlord. We also told him we were no longer interested in buying it.
We asked him for a copy of the lease agreement, including their arrangements as to the improvements we made and the agreed abatement of rental.
He refused to provide us with a copy of the lease or to allow any abatement on the rental.
I would like to know what our rights are in this situation.
